Is the WhatsApp API free?

Three different things get called “the WhatsApp API”. They have three different prices.

Three things called “the WhatsApp API”

1. Access — free

No licence, no key fee. Meta does not charge you to connect a WhatsApp Business Account to the Cloud API.

2. Messages — not free, except when they are

Meta charges per delivered template message, by category and by destination country. India: ₹0.8631 marketing, ₹0.115 utility, authentication and service.

Four things cost nothing:

  • Messages your customer sends you.
  • Your replies inside the 24-hour customer service window.
  • The first 1,000 service messages per number per month.
  • Anything inside a free entry-point window opened by a Click-to-WhatsApp ad.

3. The software you run it with — usually not free

You can integrate the Cloud API yourself. Most businesses don't, because the API gives you an endpoint, not a dashboard: no contact database, no campaign scheduler, no shared inbox, no template editor, no delivery analytics. That layer is what a platform sells, and it is what ₹6,999/year buys here.

So what does starting cost?

₹0 to build and test: create a Meta developer app, get the test number, message up to 5 verified recipients. No payment method, no business verification.

You start paying when you move to a production number and send templates at volume. Billed by Meta to your own account — we add nothing to it. The platform fee is our only line.

The setup itself is covered step by step in how to get the WhatsApp Business API.

Why does everyone say it's free?

Because "free API" is a good headline and "₹0.8631 per delivered marketing message" isn't. The businesses that get caught out budgeted the subscription and not the delivery.

Work out both on WhatsApp API pricing in India before you commit to anything — ours or anyone else's.
